Hi Everybody

March 17th, 2009 (11:21 pm)

current location: Not New Zealand
current mood: excited

Hi all,

If you're reading this chances are I just sent you the link. Here's the deal: I wanted a place to chronicle what I'm up to on my trip, which I can do this time now that I have a laptop, but I didn't want to send out emails every time like I did when I was in Tokyo. So I figure setting up this blog would be a good idea. Agree? Disagree? Let me know!

So yeah, for those who didn't figure it out yet, I'm heading to New Zealand soon. Next week to be exact. Actually, to be exact it's more like Thursday, March 26, 12:36pm. From there I've got a ~1 hour flight to SanFran. After a 5:15 hour layover I've got a 13 hour flight to Auckland, the large city on north of the north island. I've got a 2 hour layover there and then a 1:20 hour flight to Christchurch, the large NE city on the south island.

For those wanting to virtually stalk me, or confirm if I was on any recent plane crashes, my flights are:

Reno -> SanFran: Thursday, March 26, United Airlines UA717
SanFran -> Auckland: Thursday, March 26, Air New Zealand NZ7
Auckland -> Christchurch: Saturday, March 28, Air New Zealand NZ303

And back again:
Christchurch -> Auckland: Sunday, April 12, Air New Zealand NZ532
Auckland -> SanFran: Sunday, April 12, Air New Zealand NZ8
SanFran -> Reno: Sunday, April 12, United Airlines UA6597

I don't really have much of an itinerary yet, which I'm sure some of you might be thinking is weird considering I leave in about 8 days. Well, I've got pretty good ideas as to where I want to go, and a few things that need booking far in advance I've booked so I have a couple places I need to be on certain dates, but other than that I'm going to let the roads take me where they will. I'll be renting a motorcycle (Suzuki SV650, the same one I ride now) on Sunday, March 29 and heading north.

The current plan is this:
Christchurch -> Picton -> Nelson -> Christchurch -> Mt. Cook -> Queensland -> Invercargill -> Te Anau -> Milford Sound -> Wanaka -> Fox Glacier -> Arthur's Pass -> Christchurch
Or for those who want to see it in Google, click here

I've got to be in Te Anau on April 7th for a kayak trip, which I already booked, and there's a few dates I want to be in other towns, though I haven't booked anything in them...but other than that I'm completely open. I have those towns listed above and I've got dates I'd like to be in them. To get me there I've got a New Zealand road atlas specifically made for motorcycle riders (it lists and reviews the best roads to ride). It's going to be a 2 week game of connect the dots!

That's all I've got for now. If you want to know what's going on in the trip just keep checking back here. When I get a chance, most likely before heading to bed if the hotel / hostel has wifi, I'll post a little about what's going on. Any questions, or comments (always appreciated), feel free to leave them here or email. I setup this account so you don't need to sign up for an account to post comments, just select "anonymous", but tell me who you are! :)

From Aunt Pam

Thought I better check this out before you leave incase I had any problems. Will be fun to stay tuned with you along the way.

I hope you've been getting in some excersise the last few weeks as your adventures will be stretching more muscles than those usually used sitting in front of the comptuer.

Have a great time. Be careful. Proud of you.

Love you, Pam
